For his whole life, my oldest son has seen me pray the Breviary. He would watch me sit quietly with my prayer book in the morning, evening, and late at night. Little by little, the rhythm of the Church’s prayer blended into the rhythm of our home. One night, when he was seven, he asked a simple question: “Daddy, can I have one too?” I searched online, hoping to find a children’s breviary that would give him a real taste of the Church’s daily prayer. I wanted something beautiful, faithful, simple enough for a child, and small enough for him to carry around. I couldn’t find what I needed. So I made one. A Little Breviary is a first breviary for children ages 7 to 10. It includes Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer for each day of the week. It follows a simple, familiar pattern while introducing children to the Psalms, the Gospel Canticles, Scripture, hymns, intercessions, and the quiet rhythm of praying at different hours of the day. It was created for one little boy who wanted his own breviary. My hope is that, in the hands of other children, it might become something more: a small start to a lifetime of prayer.
