The Healing Angel is re-discovery of the ancient paradigm of the physician. It concerns the difficulty of formulating a modified version of this paradigm to fit modern times. The author explores the origin of “the ideal physician”. He describes the relationship between modern medicine and science as well to ancient archetypes of the healer. The obstacles to the implementation of the correct paradigm – a mistaken view of religion in the healing process, the errors of scientific materialism, the linguistic errors that confuse us, the improper role of the state, and the false economic analogies to commerce – are explored. He describes specific ways to improve the doctor–patient relationship and the physician’s self-esteem. He also points out where medicine has fallen short of its self-professed goals and suggests solutions.
