THE TRESPASSER is a 1912 novel by English writer, D. H. LAWRENCE, first published in London by GERALD DUCKWORTH & CO LTD that same year. The working title was THE SAGA OF SIEGMUND and it drew upon the experiences of a friend of Lawrence’s, Helen Corke, and her adulterous relationship with married man and violinist, Siegmund, that ended with his suicide. The story explores themes of love, inhibition, and societal constraints, focusing on the couple's week-long holiday on the Isle of Wight and the subsequent emotional deadlock that leads to Siegmund's suicide. It is noted for its intense psychological exploration and vivid natural descriptions, foreshadowing later works like Lady Chatterley's Lover. With Corke’s permission, Lawrence worked from her diary, which he urged her to publish. She did so under the title, NEUTRAL GROUND, in 1933. The novel was adapted for television in 1981 and it starred Alan Bates and Pauline Moran.
