Do you remember that film from nineteen eighty-six that tells the story of a teacher who becomes part of the staff of an institute for deaf children who sign and falls in love with a hearing-impaired woman who grew up in that college and works as a school assistant. The woman in love with the teacher, who until then remained indoors in that college, begins to frequent the outside world and new people: cinema, park, restaurant, etc. The frustrations linked to one's hearing deficit made up of misunderstandings, confusion, noises and sounds put a woman's soul to the test, despite the closeness and patience of the man who tries in every way to put her at ease, amidst the embarrassment and general discomfort with hearing people, but the relationship between the two risks deteriorating. Today things have changed, thanks to technological progress and scientific discoveries, deaf people are able to hear, depending on the case in a more or less perfect way, thanks to digital hearing aids or cochlear implants and to be able to communicate with their voice thanks to the support of speech therapists, somehow abandoning the use of sign language. Yet some deaf people consider themselves somehow a category apart. But this is not the case for Ettore, the young protagonist of this book, deaf since birth. Thanks to the discovery of a genetic therapy with stem cells, Ettore decides to undergo it in absolute secrecy and experiment with the new medical treatment to eliminate deafness, on his own skin. A tangle of emotions and thoughts overwhelms Ettore's soul, who will have to face new acoustic sensations, for better or for worse, trying to keep his newfound hearing hidden and understand if the people he has met so far have more or less the same approach to the past.
