Erich Mühsam was a German antimilitarist anarchist essayist, poet and playwright. He emerged at the end of World War I as one of the leading agitators for a federated Bavarian Soviet Republic, for which he served five years in prison. The socialist awakening, strongly influence by the Russian Revolution, included writers and activists like Ernst Toller, Gustav Landauer, Rosa Luxembourg and Kurt Eisner. Writers like Oskar Maria Graf in his “We Are Prisoners” reflected his experience during this turbulent time. His collection of poems "The Burning Earth" are considered his best work and among the greatest anti-war poems ever produced.
