This epic adventure takes place on the border of the US and Canada during a three-week life-changing experience with the world-renowned Outward Bound Wilderness School. I was only 14 years old and the epitome of a juvenile delinquent, full of energy and a chip on my shoulder toward authority. More than 210 miles we paddled and portaged and trudged through vast expanses of forest, swamp, lakes and waterways. The days were long, grueling, humid and hot. The nights were dark and full of mosquitoes. A three-day "solo" on a remote island with no food left me deeply humbled. I begin to question my dream of living wild and free… self-sufficiently. This story is of my first major adventure and my first-ever journal. This set the stage for 20+ years of remote exploration, discovery and documentary production in Alaska, Hawaii and Minnesota.
