In 1963 Paul Stein, a sailor stationed at Subic Bay, falls in love with Maria, a bar girl, and is later court-martialed for marrying her without US Navy permission. He returns to live with her in the notorious sailor town outside the base, but a mayoral assassination sets him on a bizarre odyssey that leads from mountain jungles to a Manila ad agency where he becomes a hot commercial director. When he and his crew are kidnapped by communist guerillas, he learns that to survive the turbulence of this changing culture, like bamboo, he must bend to the winds of fate. But for Paul, survival comes at a high price.
