“Alone” recorded on “Anticipation” (BJUR 015) c2009 David Smith / Sumisusan Music / BMI
This tune came about when my wife and daughter were away for a couple of months, the first separation I’d had from my daughter and I was feeling somewhat, well, alone at the time. I happened to be listening to the Mozart D minor piano concerto (No. 20) and the opening few measures put the seed of an idea in my mind. The result is a mixture of three different feels simultaneously; a very fast swing feel in the drums, a very open bass feeling each measure as a beat, and then a quasi-Brazilian figure in the piano/guitar. With the melody on those underpinnings I tried to capture some of the feeling that I had at the time. There is a countermelody as well, and the form is ABA with the last A a transposition of the first. Included is a concert melody chart with both melody lines and charts for both piano and guitar.
