“Anticipation” recorded on “Anticipation” (BJUR 015) c2006 David Smith / Sumisusan Music / BMI
The thrust of this tune is a three-part counterpoint in the chordal part, as each voice makes its way through the tune the resulting harmony has some surprises and some dramatic shifts. Rhythmically there are two chords per bar, both “anticipated” an eighth-note ahead. This builds tension against the quarter-note feel in the drums, and the tension continues somewhat relentlessly throughout. The melody is built off of the opening phrase and plays rhythmically around the chords, often anticipating the anticipations. I usually play this with trumpet and tenor in true unison, which puts the tenor way above the top of the horn at one point, but it can work any number of ways. Included is the melody lead sheet and the chord chart for piano or guitar.
