When the present Emmanuel Catholic Church in Dayton Ohio was built in 1871, there was no money for the windows which we see today. Sometime after the Dayton Flood of 1913, all of these windows were replaced by the ones we see today. Member families at Emmanuel donated the windows, which are German made. The names inscribed on the glass as a living memorial to those families. Some descendants of those families are still members of Emmanuel Church. The windows, measuring 6 feet wide by 40 feet high, are double lancet in a Gothic arch, with a medallion window at the apex. The symbols in the medallions relate to the story told by the window. The angels in the windows mirror each other across the nave of the church. Perhaps knowing the history of stained glass and the windows of Emmanuel will help each of us more fully appreciate the beauty and significance of God's dwelling place.
