In this first of a trilogy, "Trial and Destiny I" opens in 1956 with a steel worker, named Reed Peters, making a third attempt of making it big as an egg farmer. Reed's wife, Marsha, views the try as a chance for her to be able to live in a home owned by her and him. However, Reed's business turns into a nightmare through his alcoholism and his brother LeRoy's unreliability.
Born during the nightmare, Reed and Marsha's second oldest son, Duane, grows up to be a boy with conflicting desires of becoming either a politician or a writer. The desire picked by him will leads into the kind of life he never imagines.
At the same time, Duane's cousin Davey Perry and aunt Lisa Robbins become caught up in the fury of the 1960's. Davey's choice to be a Marine lands him in some of the most fierce battles of the Second Vietnam War while Lisa's marriage to a rock musician leads her to Chicago, where she witnesses a riot involving policemen and antiwar demonstrators.
