When Duane Peters gets out of junior high in the summer of 1973, he wanted to buy himself a typewriter, so he can fulfill his dream of becoming a great writer in tradition of Ernest Hemmingway and Leo Tolstoy. He thus takes a job as a lot boy at the Frost Stop drive-in across the street from his house.
With the money he earns that summer, he buys himself a typewriter. Within four months after the purchase, his job turns his life into a nightmare when he finds himself working for a mean boss who won't pay him for the actual time he works every day. The abuse from his manager drives Duane to go looking for another job. His quest, though, will have an eventual, unintended impact on the future of a young couple's romance.
