The Shetland Neurodiversity Project's Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) course equips parents, carers, and professionals with essential tools to promote positive behavioural changes, particularly for autistic individuals in Shetland. Aligned with the Council's legal and ethical goals, the training fosters inclusivity and ensures better care across the community. Positive Behaviour Support, or PBS, is a proven approach to addressing challenging behaviours in individuals with learning disabilities. It emphasizes understanding the underlying causes of behaviours and implementing strategies to improve quality of life. This resource adapts PBS techniques from a pilot program originally developed by Edinburgh Napier University and other leading organizations for NHS Education for Scotland. Without adequate support, individuals with learning disabilities may face significant risks such as placement breakdowns, neglect, or social isolation. This training focuses on equipping professionals with the skills to mitigate these risks and enhance support. This resource is tailored for parents and carers supporting autistic individuals, health and social care professionals working with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours, and community members seeking to foster inclusivity. The training is designed to ensure participants gain a thorough understanding of PBS principles, develop actionable strategies to address behaviours positively, and create environments that encourage meaningful social inclusion. The course includes several modules. Module 1 provides an overview of PBS concepts and their practical applications. Module 2 offers specialized guidance for addressing behaviour in forensic settings. Module 3 focuses on supporting communication through improved interaction and understanding. Module 4 helps participants identify the root causes of challenging behaviours through an exercise in detective work. Module 5 covers designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive multi-element support plans. Module 6 addresses translating theoretical plans into actionable steps, and Module 7 empowers families and teams to sustain positive changes by supporting and educating others.
