The Synoptic Problem: Modern Solutions to Ancient Questions

In the late first century, an extraordinary literary phenomenon took shape that would profoundly influence the development of Christianity and Western civilization: the emergence of multiple narrative accounts of Jesus of Nazareth that became known as the gospels. Three of these accounts—those attributed to Matthew, Mark, and Luke—share so many similarities in content, structure, and wording that they have come to be known as the "Synoptic" Gospels, from the Greek words meaning "seen together."
