Owen Mallory Yates agonizes in the torture rack of compassion, pulled on the one hand by love for his family and compelled, on the other, by empathy for the thousands of refugees in hopeless conditions. A popular and competent high school teacher in line for promotions but driven by compassion rooted in his faith, Owen reluctantly accepts the oversight of Hope for ReHabitation, a small NGO refugee agency, but finds the refugee camps’ physical needs, cultural conflicts and painful separations from his family overwhelming; he survives a suicide bomb explosion, finishes with a string of amazing successes and is finally forced out of the position by a camp injury leading to a permanent disability.
