The setting is South Africa, and Alan’s childhood is set against the backdrop of World War Two, a time of tremendous uncertainty and, in Alan’s case, great adventure. Alan’s early years are eventful to the extreme, but coming to terms with the world around him presents him with a series of moral and philosophical dilemmas, which are accentuated by an aspect of his character that remains touchingly innocent. The story opens when Alan sees something in a mountain cave that shocks him to his very core. The story develops at a rapid, and sometimes quite frightening pace, to a dramatic climax.
