BIOCHEMISTRY: A Comprehensive Textbook for B.Pharm Students

Biochemistry occupies a foundational place in the education of every pharmacy student. It is the discipline that explains, at the level of molecules and reactions, why the body behaves the way it does in health, and why it fails in disease — knowledge that underlies the rational understanding of pharmacology, pathophysiology, and clinical pharmacy practice alike. This textbook has been written to present the Biochemistry (BP202T) syllabus prescribed for the first professional year of the B.Pharm programme in a manner that is thorough, clearly organised, and directly useful for examination preparation as well as for building a durable conceptual foundation.
The book is organised into five units, mirroring the structure of the prescribed syllabus: Enzymology and Clinical Enzymology; Bioenergetics, Carbohydrate Metabolism, and Biological Oxidation; Lipid Metabolism; Amino Acid and Protein Metabolism; and Nucleic Acid Metabolism and Genetic Information Transfer. Within each unit, concepts are built up systematically, moving from basic chemical principles to their physiological context and finally to their clinical relevance, so that the student appreciates not only what a pathway does, but why it matters at the bedside and in the pharmacy.
Throughout the text, "Clinical correlate" boxes highlight the practical significance of biochemical concepts — connecting enzyme kinetics to drug mechanisms, metabolic pathways to disease states, and molecular biology to modern therapeutics — reflecting the conviction that biochemistry is best learned not as an abstract subject to be memorised, but as the molecular logic underlying pharmacy practice.
