General Pharmacology occupies a foundational position in the B.Pharm curriculum, prescribed as BP304T for the third semester, establishing the conceptual vocabulary and quantitative framework upon which every subsequent pharmacology, pharmacotherapeutics, and clinical pharmacy course in the programme depends. Before a student can meaningfully study the pharmacology of a particular drug class — antihypertensives, antibiotics, anticancer agents — they must first understand the general principles that apply to every drug: how it is absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and excreted; how it interacts with its biological target to produce an effect; what determines the size and duration of that effect; and what can go wrong, in the form of adverse reactions, drug interactions, or toxicity. This textbook has been written to cover the complete syllabus of General Pharmacology (Theory), a three-credit core course carrying 45 lecture hours. The course is unusual in spanning both foundational, decades-old pharmacological principles (receptor theory, pharmacokinetics, dose-response relationships) and genuinely contemporary material — organ-on-chip preclinical screening models, pharmacogenomics and precision medicine, biosimilars, and chronopharmacology — reflecting how rapidly the discipline continues to evolve even at its most foundational level. Throughout this book, an effort has been made to build each concept from a clear physiological or pharmacological picture before introducing its formal terminology or, where relevant, its governing equation, and to connect abstract principles to concrete clinical and pharmaceutical relevance wherever possible — why understanding first-pass metabolism matters for choosing a drug's route of administration, why the therapeutic index of a drug determines how cautiously it must be dosed, why a genotoxicity finding in preclinical testing can end a promising drug candidate's development. Worked examples, labelled diagrams, and pharmacy-relevant case studies accompany the theoretical material throughout.
