This novel is both fiction and history. The central characters see action in the United States, Canada, and, primarily, Scotland. They are brought together by a recurrent nightmare, the contents of which are almost the same for each dreamer. The main protagonist in the story, a female psychologist, believes that buried in the collective unconscious of each is a tragic event in Scottish history. She sets about to discover what happened centuries before. At every turn she is thwarted by those who do not wish to see Scottish history revisited, nor the mythology of the Stone of Scone altered.
