SKYLARK THREE is a science fiction novel by American writer E. E. SMITH PHD, the second book in his Skylark series. Originally serialized in the AMAZING STORIES magazine in 1930, it was first collected in book form in 1948 by FANTASY PRESS. The novel is a classic space opera following Richard Seaton as he builds a massive, 1000km-wide starship (the Skylark Three) to defend humanity. Seaton combats the vicious Fenachrone aliens, aiding the Valeronians while managing his nemesis, DuQuesne, who attempts to take over Earth. The story continues after The Skylark of Space, with Seaton and his allies on the planet Kondal attacked by the planet Urvan. Meanwhile, the "Fenachrone," a dangerous alien race, plan to conquer the galaxy. Seaton develops the "Zone of Force" for protection and uses a new, massive ship featuring a mechanical brain. The title refers to the ship itself, which is constructed with the help of the Valeronians and designed for rapid interstellar travel. It features intense space battles against the Fenachrone and maneuvering against arch-nemesis DuQuesne, who tries to take over Earth. The novel is recognized as a significant, action-heavy development in the Skylark series, focusing on rapid expansion and technological superiority.
