A young American goes to the land of his parents to fight for Cuba's independence from Spain. Another young American goes to Cuba to work in her father's newfound sugar estate. Their backgrounds, goals, and visions of the world, and even their views of that war for independence couldn't be more different. Yet their lives are joined in a way neither could have imagined, in a place that is slowly sinking into disease and violence. The struggle for independence eventually becomes the Spanish-American War, and Lincoln and Keri have to find their very different roles in it. Disappointment and bitterness face off against stubborn hope in this chapter of the 1890's when Cuba and the United States become joined as well.
