Appointed to prepare the Declaration of Independence. 1779 Elected to the Virginia Legislature. 1782 Appointed by Congress to serve with the American Negotiators for Peace. 1783 Elected Delegate to Congress. 1784 Appointed by Congress as Minister Plenipotentiary, 1785 Succeeded Franklin as Minister to France. 1789 Appointed Secretary of State by Washington. 1796 Elected Vice-President of the United States. 1800 Eletced [sic] President of the Untied States. 1803 Louisiana Purchase. 1804 Re-Elected President of the United States. 1818 University of Virginia founded, of which Jefferson was Rector until his death. 1826 Died on the same day that John Adams expired, July 4th.
