In the darkest days of 1861, with Civil War on a near horizon and during one of the worst winters on record, the owners of the Express set for their riders an impossible task: to hold California to the Union by delivering Lincoln’s Inaugural Address to the Far West in less than ten days.
The risk was high, the stakes were great, but to boys too young to suspect their own mortality, nothing seemed impossible.
In the attempt, they rode the Pony Express into legend.
