This historical novel describes the stories of two black slaves during the 1840's in Kentucky. Lucy, a black housekeeper, was raped by her 'owner' William Hamilton. She stabbed and killed him. Pregnant with Hamilton's baby, she was allowed to stay alive until she weaned the child. This is a poignant story of the cruelty of slavery, and the beauty of friendship and love.
