Socialism: Utopian and Scientific is a brilliant and compact work exploring the difference between the early utopian socialists and the modern scientific socialists embodied by Karl Marx. In this work Engels first starts with description of the utopian socialist movements, what motivated them, and what actions they took to try to usher in socialism. Then he goes into a short description of the development of Hegelian dialectics, contrasting the dialectics and metaphysics of bourgeois philosophers and the synthesis of Hegelian dialectics with materialism by Marx and Engels to form the dialectical materialist philosophy. Finally, he finishes with a historical materialist explanation of the transition from feudalism to capitalism.
