Daniel Deronda, first published in 1876, was the last novel completed by George Elliott. Published at a time when anti-Jewish sentiments ran high in England the novel’s sympathetic portrayal of Jews stands out in stark contrast to the crude and hostile caricatures littering the works of Dickens, Trollope and other Victorian authors.
