wounded by zen

ByGil Helmick

They say your education is what you've learned and your culture is what you have left over after you forget what you've learned. "wounded by zen" is driven by strangely harnessed urges to buck the monotony and control of a culture left in the wake of forgetfulness. It is a groping toward self realization and freedom: humorous, didactic, corrupt and challenging. "wounded by zen" speculates that creativity is an incessant, although not necessarily constructive, force. It is gritty and existential; it is transcendental, cocky and optimistic. The verse is robust and immediate. "wounded by zen" collides with the polished windows of here and now. It pokes the bubble of New Age hype in a romantic effort to break through to fresh air and mist. It is rich in metaphor, action, twists of fate and unique syntax. The narrative is propelled by conflicts contagious to those unwilling to submit to defeat by routine and forgetfulness.
