Glenn Towery, who wrote Shadow Boxer is now an award winning screenplay writer. This short play is about a fictional character who fights a shadowy opponent during the gang infested crack cocaine epidemic era and crisis of the 1980s and 90s. Shadow Boxer fights for the lives of the poor, the black and downtrodden impoverished cultures throughout America whose communities have been ruined by drugs and gun violence. His mission is epitomized by being a representative of the most oppressed people in America, Black people.
Shadow Boxer was first performed in Los Angeles, Calif., at the Inner City Cultural Centers National Short Play Competition. There were about 300 plays entered into the competition. Shadow Boxer was one of the Four Finalist Plays selected for the final round.
Although Shadow Boxer did not win the competition it was probably the most talked about and attended play during the competition. This is a revised version of the play.
