St. Lawrence Market
They laid the stone with merchant’s intent,
A civic dream in firm cement.
The arches rose with steady grace,
To frame the city’s trading face.
The walls were thick with law and bread,
Where justice walked and cattle bled.
The market hummed with daily need,
And council met where fish would feed.
The jail below held silent breath,
Above, the stalls defied all death.
A paradox of trade and rule,
Where iron bars met farmer’s tool.
