In the valley village of Caldhollow, Fen has spent 24 years as the man who feels danger coming before anyone else — a broken gift born from watching his twin brother's soul torn away, incomplete, at a funeral gone wrong when they were seven. His people, the Undersung, survive by staying quiet: they believe silence protects the soul (the "Note") from The Hush, an ancient, indifferent force that settles over anything too loud and steals it away, leaving behind the Kept — bodies frozen mid-gesture, present but empty. But the doctrine has it backward. An elder named Rue, guilt-ridden since a botched ritual decades ago, teaches Fen the forgotten truth: it isn't loudness that draws The Hush — it's silence. A Note never spoken, never risked, wavers and comes loose. Speaking a true thing out loud, on purpose, is what actually holds a soul steady. As Fen learns to use his voice for the first time, he draws The Hush's attention more than ever before — and the village council moves to silence him permanently, convinced he's endangering everyone. Racing against his own people's fear, Fen must do the one thing no one has dared in a generation: perform the old rite properly, eyes open, freely given, to finally let his brother's soul finish the goodbye it never got to say.
