It starts with a little prurient interest, a dose of freedom, some pent up urges, a little need for expression – but then you throw in some obvious sexism, more than a little bit of fetishism, some political and even ethnic incorrectness, and simply the hidden morals of the day – and you have the classic adult-interest magazines of the middle 20th Century. The so-called sexual revolution hadn't started, but the Victorian days were long gone. Everything was right out there, as long as it wasn't...you know... right out there where people could see.
