Charlie McCarthy was a block of wood. Edgar Bergen had someone carve Charlie onto the image of someone Edgar knew as a kid, and from there Charlie had an incredible career on the stage, on radio (where many people never realized he was...you know....a block of wood), movies, television, and even comics!
