When I graduated from Harlem High School in June 1945, I had turned eighteen and was required to register for the Selective Service draft.
WW 2 fighting had ended in Europe with the surrender of Germany and Italy but continued in the South Pacific.
I passed the physical exam and was sworn in into the United States Army in Chicago.
This was the beginning of my U S Army service on September 5. 1945
This book has pictures and documents covering my service.
I first went to Fort Sheridan, Illinois and was issued army uniform clothing.
From there I traveled on an army troop train to California.
The final destination was the Camp Roberts basic infantry training center in southern California located 16 miles north of Paso Robles.
Upon completion of my basic infantry training in October I was transported by boat to South Korea for occupation duty on May 1946 where I became 19.
This ended in December 1946 when I sailed back to San Francisco and was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan in Illinois. I served from September 1945 to January 1947
