Johnny Royle, a man born without a conscience, could deal ruthlessly with trouble but he had a dangerous tendency to be over-confident; which helped him earn a good living as a drug courier. Royle led a fairly untroubled life. Then outsiders began to trespass on his personal space and take a very inconvenient interest in what he was up to. Some of them were doing it for the money that came through the post along with Royle's photograph and his name and address. Someone wanted him dead.
The police joined the list of unwelcome intruders following an encounter with a professional assassin, whose marriage Royle had broken up. Unable to part with more than a fraction of the truth, Royle had to stonewall relentlessly. But then, along came a £50,000 invitation and some revealing answers.
