Iñupiatun, also known as Iñupiaq or Alaskan Inuit, is an indigenous Inuit language spoken by the Inuit (Iñupiat) of Alaska and parts of Russia (Chukotka) and Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories). With around 3,000 L1 Speaker, Iñupiaq language and its surrounding heritage remain as one of the most critical human resources in the State of Alaska and in the Arctic Region. Currently, many revital movements and indigenous activists are working to preserve and reclaim the language back to the original land of Inuit Nunaat, the land of Inuit.
In this visual dictionary, various range of basic vocabularies from different dialects will be presented with the visuals. This dictionary was created in hope of supporting the revitalization of Iñupiatun as well as lowering the barrier to those who want to be familiar with the Inuit cultures, languages, and traditions.
This dictionary primarily focuses on the new learners of the language as well as the generals who are interested in learning Iñupiatun vocabularies with the pictures, as the each word, its definition, and picture would be grouped together to be presented.
Although learning new languages and cultures, especially those that are not located at the mainstream culture would be challenging and sometimes hard, this brings also high-level of honors and legacies as being part of exclusive group of people of 3,000.
