Richard Klein, an author who has had previous success in his novel writing, suddenly finds himself suffering from severe case of writer’s block. Desperate for a solution to his problem, he jokingly appeals to Calliope, the Greek Muse of Epic Poetry for inspiration. And she shows up! After promising to help him, she informs him that he will be visited by many great authors of the past who will critique his writing and attempt to help him overcome his block. Immortal writers like Shakespeare, Milton, Austen, Hemingway, Dickens, and others all show up and make suggestions on the best way to improve his writing and cure his writer’s block. Klein, convinced that he is having hallucinations or a nervous breakdown, agrees, at the urging of his new girlfriend, to see a psychiatrist who uses different methods to probe his psyche and discover what the real problem is. The revelations that he is confronted with reveals keys in Richard’s past that have affected every facet of his life. The final ‘spirit’ that visits him finally provides the impetus to complete his book and find happiness and fulfillment at the same time.
