Evacuated as a child from England to America during World War II, Mary is taken on by the Grants, a rich American ranching family. When Mary's parents are killed during the London bombings, the Grants adopt her permanently.
Mary's life is dictated by others. Her gentle nature makes it easy for others, in particular the Grants, to control events. Mary falls in love with Duncan, a fellow British evacuee. When he leaves to fight in the War, she seems to have lost him for ever. She marries first one Grant son and then, after becoming a war widow, she marries the second.
She has two sons, but realises too late that she was tricked out of the knowledge that Duncan was always true to her. She has a chance to break away. Will she follow her dream or her duty?
