What is Islam?

ByIslam Bradford

Islam is the largest monotheistic religion in the world today with over a billion adherents. The word Islam means 'submission' and the total surrender of oneself to the one true God and sole Creator. An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning. "one who submits [to Allah]." "This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." [Surah al-Ma'idah (5):3] The Muslim belief is that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, the final Prophet and Messenger. Muslims regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but rather as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of the previous Prophets such as Abraham, Moses, Jesus and other Prophets of God.
