This study explores how journalists have been reporting performancing enhancing drug use in athletics, concentrating strongly on the Ben Johnson scandal and the influence it has in the reporting future positive drug tests. This study gives an historical overview of both performance enhancing drugs and its relationship with athletics before specifically examining: (a) the concept of representation and nationalism in the press and whether it has pressured athletes to win at all costs; (b) the invasion of journalism supporting athletes’ use of performance enhancing drugs, discussing the possibility of it become the standard; and (c) bad news journalism, which often negates impartial coverage.
