Autobiography of J Harold Powers

An autobiography of James Harold Powers, with an historical sketch of the Swift - Powers ancestry from the year 1800. This is the story of the Powers family of Louisville, NY and the Swift family of Potsdam, NY. J. Harold Powers studied music at the Crane Institute and Potsdam Normal School, graduating in 1904. He moved west to Minnesota to teach music with stops in Willmar, Hutchinson, and Crookston, Minnesota. J. Harold met his wife Mary Brainard in Hutchinson, and within a year of their marriage he had become a professor at Moorhead Normal in Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1918 they moved to Mt Pleasant, Minnesota where he bacame chairman of the Music Department at Central Normal, now known as Central Michigan University. He taught there for 30 years and was renowned for starting the state music contest.
