Lamps on Heights

The Path of Contemplation is an experiment undertaken in the individual mind and must differ as minds differ. There can be no life in mappings-out and in scale-plans. But the things which have helped others in days of old may still offer shadows of aid and perhaps more: they are at least indications of things that are signified and involved by the attempt to follow the inward life, while at most they are doors which open on the early stages. They do not unfold the living secret of the inward way.
