Todd Black is an artist and entrepreneur who has worked in photography and related fields for more than thirty years. He began photographing as a young man while studying political science in Maryland.
One of his early influences was Dadaism. He was attracted to Dada because of the social and political statement being made and by the experimental direction of the movement. He was also somewhat influenced by the Bauhaus and later by the f-64 California school. More recently, by the work and teaching of Alexey Brodovitch.
In 1979 he founded Montage Photographics in Bel Air, Maryland and in 1987 Gallery 21 in Bel Air. He presented his first exhibition, “Experimental Work” in 1984 at Harford Community College. In 1991, he relocated to Antigua, Guatemala where he founded Galeria Montaje. In 1998, Todd returned to the United States and founded Todd Black Photographics and Todd Black Books. In 2013, Todd Black moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia where he presently lives.
