Catherine Morland loves to escape into the world of the Gothic novel. But when she travels to the fashionable city of Bath for the first time she allows her imagination to run away with her. In Bath she rejects the advances of the uncouth John Thorpe and falls in love with the witty Henry Tilney. Invited to the house of the Tilneys, Northanger Abbey, she hopes to find a house full of horrifying mysteries. But Catherine must be careful as she is in danger of creating a bad impression with her prospective father-in-law, General Tilney. Northanger Abbey was the first novel that Jane Austen prepared for publication, but due to a dispute with the proposed published did not see publication until after her death. Northanger Abbey was published posthumously after Jane Austen’s death in a four volume set together with Persuasion, the last novel she wrote.
