Barbara Davis' life turns upside down when she is asked by a Polish fugitive, who claims to be a relative, to care for his daughter. Her life becomes intertwined with his, and when he later is captured and sent to a internment camp on the Isle of Man, she continues her relationship with him through letters. At the same time, her husband is serving in the army in Cyprus, and writes of his activities there. The local history of the time from the Mellor, Marple Bridge area of Cheshire is highlighted.
