Searcher Elgin Marbles, Class 2, works in an agency run by Overseer Makepeace. The task of searchers is to find individuals the law has failed to find and generally work alone. It is time of some semblance of order beginning to emerge in a world that has been brought to the brink of destruction, but life is still hard and brutal. She is asked to pursue a character who she sets out to find, and locates him eventually in a club. Searcher Alexis Marzin is there also and together they capture the man and bring him in for questioning after which he will be handed over to the authorities. Overseer Makepeace decides to put them together as a temporary unit when he gives them their next assignment: the capture of a young man who has allegedly killed his entire family. From then on, Elgin and Alexis find themselves swept up into a world they did not know existed.
