If anyone that I knew growing up would have said to me one day you're going to write a book, I would have replied “your nuts." Although I did quite a bit of writing during my military career and even more when I retired from the U.S. Navy and went to work in the Information Technology (IT) industry, actually writing a book about a good portion of my life never crossed my mind.
Until recently when I was on Facebook (FB) reading some of the posts on the group chat room "Joseph Lee Rec Center (aka the Rec),"did I start to think deeply about my old neighborhood (A to K): the good times I had as a child and as a grownup and most importantly the friendships that I developed over many years. I often thought about getting everyone together one more time for old times' sake.
This was really the impetus behind me writing this book. Each comment on the chat room brought me back to the wonderful memories and in some cases life changing experiences while living in the neighborhood.
Many of the names associated with the comments on the chat group were people that I remembered and often wondered how they were doing. It also made me think about the many friends that I haven't seen or heard from in years. I hope they are all doing well.
I'm not naive and recognize that the old neighborhood has changed considerably. Many would say for the worst. That's something to be debated. But I'm focused on the good old days in this book. However, what I do know is that at some point those memories will be gone. Gone forever! There is less and less families and kids that grew up in the neighborhood that are still around and this number will continue to dwindle over time.
