Based on the real-life events of Kate Warne, the first female detective for the Pinkerton agency in 1856, this story follows Kate as she enters the agency and proves she is more than what other people see. While Kate struggles with her identity as a lesbian woman, anxiety, and fear, she courageously helps formerly enslaved women flee to freedom in Canada. The book also explores how many women in the 1800s lived life as a man, one of the only ways to escape the bondage of marriage and children. While not perfect, Jocelyn seeks to create an opening for dialog on issues of formerly enslaved peoples, abuse towards women, LBGTQIA+ issues, and obliterating old ways of being. The book holds no punches as it pushes the reader to abandon beliefs provided by others and to create a world of their own making.
