A brief history of the battle for the island of Iwo Jima which signaled the end of WWII in the Pacific. Some first-hand observations related to my tour of duty there in 1967-68 when the United States returned Iwo Jima to Japan after 23 years of occupation. First hand experience of the hardships which were endured by American Marines in taking the island as well as for the Japanese soldiers who lived beneath the ground in the maze of caves criss-crossing the island.
