John Eedes (1609-1667) was a puritan preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Reformed theologian.
Concerned with the state of theology in his day surrounding justification, Eedes took great pains to write almost exhaustively about the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone. Eedes shows that justification by faith alone is not a physical act, but a judicial act. It is not by inherent righteousness, but God as judge in the court of mercy by judicial declaration remits sin to the believer through Christ’s merits, and absolves the sinner repenting, and believing. He masterfully refutes Antinomianism, Arminianism, Roman Catholicism and the new divinity of Richard Baxter on this point. There is no doubt that this is one of the best treatments of justification by faith alone in print from any age in church history.
