John Maillard’s visual anthology of private mythologies and whimsy is
at once an intensely personal exploration of photography as a tool for
storytelling, a tribute to the often vexed process of creativityand a
benchmark for digital age darkroom practices.
The Photography and Multimedia Programme Leader at the Christchurch
Polytechnic Institute of Technology’s School of Art & Design, Maillard’s
work embodies the spirit of creation described by humanistic philosopher
Erich Fromm as “the courage to let go of certainties”. An effortless and
natural activity in our first few years in this world, creativity requires us
to untether ourselves from the secure hitching post of convention and to
submit with a childlike disregard of tradition to the process of enchantment.
